What this release does not do yet, or does with a cost you should know about before you rely on it.
AI drafts need revising. In a blind rating of drafts on test books, each draft was usable after at most one revision. Treat a draft as material to revise, not as finished prose. Every AI action is optional and the book works without one.
AI costs are estimates. The application states the size of every request before it is sent, and the provider bills you directly on your own key. On the test books a full chapter draft of about 2,500 words cost about US$0.07 with one cloud model; other models, longer books and retries cost more or less. A local model costs nothing to run.
The book file is not encrypted on this computer. A .nomicon file
can be read by anyone who can read your Documents folder. Keep the
folder on an account or disk you control.
Connector keys are kept by Windows. A key goes to the Windows secure store under your Windows account, never into the book or the settings file.
Text exports leave out the scene AI context settings. Text and
folder exports carry the prose; a book imported back from them starts
author-aware. Save native whole-book copy in Book settings, Export,
keeps everything in one .nomicon file.
Older versions cannot open a book a newer one has written to. See Install for the copy kept before that first write.
This release is a preview. Version 0.2.0-preview.1: the features in this manual work, and later previews may still change how they look. See Install.
Accounts and community features are not part of this release. This preview has no server, so signing in is not available. Publishing, following, chat, guilds and tournaments keep their screens and say so. Writing, the Asterism, checks, AI and export work without an account.
Some AI connections were tested only against a test server. The Claude CLI connection and the direct Ollama and LM Studio connections were checked against a local test server, not against the real programs. Cloud keys and OpenAI-compatible addresses were checked live.
Some AI details are not finished.
- An AI draft started from New run or from the scene draft dialog can only be added to the end of the scene, not put in place of a selected passage.
- The passage a draft replaces is remembered by this computer, not by the book file.
- Detector findings are all listed, with no grouping of the weaker ones.
- A character’s earlier mentions in a scene that is only partly recent are not offered to the AI as history.
- Notes attached to a required character count against the AI request size.
- Parts of the AI request preparation and preview are only partly tested.
- A running AI request is cancelled from Panels, Suggestions; the writing screen has no Cancel of its own.
This preview is not signed. See Install.
