Nothing here is published until you turn it on. The switch at the head of the screen is the whole of it: with it off, the screen holds the switch, the two notes and nothing else, and the server has been told nothing about your writing. Turning it on publishes four figures, the words this week, the sittings this week, the streak and the words in total, and lets a badge be recorded.

Turning it off takes the published figures away. The switch and a stored figure are two facts, so turning the switch off both stops publication and asks for what was published to be removed. What is on this screen is computed from the book’s own record either way, and reading it needs nothing published at all.

The tiles and the chart are read from the record. Words today, words this week, the streak, chapters finished and proposals reviewed, with a bar per day of the range. Words today, words this week and the bars use the count Settings, Editor, Words today counts chooses. All of it is derived from the record of how the book was written, so it works with no connection and can be computed again from the file.

The catalogue is fixed and the server holds the same list. Each badge carries a name, what it is for and a tier. A badge you have not unlocked reads as locked; a hidden one you have not unlocked carries no name at all until it unlocks, since naming it would give it away.

An unlock is not a publication. A badge is written the moment its condition was met and is never removed, because a thing that happened cannot unhappen. Who sees it is the separate mark on the card, off until you set it, and the list you send is the whole answer rather than an addition, so hiding one is sending the list without it. A stranger reads the marked ones and nothing else.

Two badges are the server’s own. One arrives when somebody forks a work you published, and one when a challenge reaches its target. The application never unlocks those two itself, and the server refuses any identifier that is not in its copy of the catalogue, so a client cannot invent a badge.

A standing tournament entry publishes your figures whatever the switch says. That holds for the length of the event and is read off the entry rather than written anywhere, so withdrawing or the event ending stops it at once. The note under the switch says so.

Try: turn the switch off and on again. The tiles and the chart go and come back, and the badges you had marked for your public page are still marked, because hiding a figure is not forgetting a badge.
