Shelf
The shelf is this device’s list of books, and the cloud list beside it. A book on this device is a file: the shelf keeps the path of every book you have made, imported or opened here, and reads each one’s card without opening the book. Move a file and its card says the file is not there; the card is a pointer, not the book.
The band at the top continues the book you were last in. It carries the mode, the state, the chapter and step you left, the words against the book’s target, the streak and the date. Where no book has been opened on this device the band offers New book and Import instead.
Sort and view. Sort by Recent, Title or Words. View as covers or as rows. Both are per device and neither changes the books.
Four ways to add a book. New book and Import open the wizard
(screens/03-new-book.md and screens/04-import-book.md). Open file
picks a .nomicon file already on this device and puts it on the list.
A book made or imported is opened straight away.
A file copied outside the app is its own card. A .nomicon file
copied in a file manager keeps the book id of the book it came from.
When the shelf already holds that book at another path, the file gets a
card of its own marked Copy. Opening it asks: Open as separate book gives
the file a new book id and its title with “copy” added, as Duplicate
does, notes in its record which book it was copied from and opens it; Open the shelf’s book opens the
original instead.
The overflow of a card. Show in folder, Book settings, Preview as reader, Duplicate, Forget and Delete.
- Forget takes the book off this device’s list and leaves the file where it is. It asks first and names the file. Open file puts it back.
- Delete closes the book, deletes the file and takes the card off the list. It asks first and names the file. It cannot be undone.
Books in the cloud. The section under the device list holds the copies kept for your account. It is empty until you sign in and turn sync on for a book, and the line in the empty section says so.
Published works and saved states. The last two sections list the works published from the books on this shelf, and the named states saved from the game menu, each with Restore.
Searching the shelf. The shelf carries no search field of its own: Ctrl+K (outside the prose) or Ctrl+Shift+P opens the command search, which groups books with everything else it finds.
Try: forget a book, and its card goes while the file stays. Open file, pick the same file, and the card comes back with the same title and counts.
